souvenir keychains in one shoebox. Almost every one of them a bit sad.

Our story

how it started

Maya Okafor spent eleven years as a flight attendant and bought a keychain in every city she landed in. By 2014 she had 212 of them, and nearly all were flimsy, mass-printed souvenirs with the city's name in the same stock font.

One snowy February night she dumped the whole shoebox on her neighbor's kitchen table. Theo Lindqvist was a jewelry machinist who had just been laid off. Her question: why does something you touch twenty times a day feel so cheap?

That spring they stamped 50 brass tags in Theo's garage and sold every one at a Portland farmers' market before lunch. We've been answering Maya's question ever since.
